Saugeen Shores Police charged two Port Elgin residents with impaired driving Saturday night.
Police say on September 12th at 10:15p.m. officers responded to report of a two vehicle collision on Albert Street North near MacDonald Lane in Southampton.
They say one vehicle hit the back end of the other while they were both heading south on Albert Street North.
The officer located the man who had hit the vehicle in front of him and formed the opinion he was impaired by a drug. He was arrested and taken to the OPP’s Walkerton detachment where a Drug Recognition Expert determined the man was impaired by a drug.
A 40 year old Port Elgin man has been charged with:
Operation While Impaired – Drug
Possession of a Schedule 1 substance – methamphetamine
Operate Motor Vehicle – No Insurance
He was released with a court date in addition to his license being suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days. (Correction note: Police had initially said 45 days, then issued a correction)
Meanwhile, earlier that night at 9:30, a call from a citizen helped police stop an impaired driver.
Police say the call was about a vehicle being driven in an erratic manner on Highway 21 into Port Elgin.
An officer located the vehicle leaving a fast food restaurant in Port Elgin and initiated a traffic stop on Goderich Street. Police say the officer detected the smell of alcohol coming from inside the vehicle.
The woman provided a roadside breath sample and registered a ‘fail.’
Police say at the station she provided two samples of her breath that were double the legal limit.
A 36 year old Port Elgin Woman has been charged with impaired driving. In addition to the charge, her license was suspended for 90 days and her vehicle was impounded for seven days. She was released with a court date.
