The Progressive Conservative MPP for Huron-Bruce believes there will be renewed business interest in the riding, as the economy recovers from COVID-19.
In an interview with Country 104.9 News, Lisa Thompson says she believes work-from-home measures prompted by the novel coronavirus have raised the prospect of businesses moving to midwestern Ontario.
With lower cost-of-living and real estate prices, Thompson feels those working from home will be looking at areas like Huron and Bruce counties to conduct their remote businesses.
Key to conducting at-home business, Thompson says, will be broadband internet, which is looking to expand in the two counties.
Currently, the Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT) group is overseeing a $209 million broadband expansion, which includes Huron-Bruce.
It is expected the SWIFT project will provide high-speed broadband internet to presently under served regions of rural Ontario.
Thompson says expanding broadband internet will not only enable locals to work from home, but also help the region embrace the opportunity for new business, manufacturing, and economies.
