A disturbance call to Hanover Police this past weekend resulted in a pursuit and a male suspect allegedly trying to take an officer's handgun.
Hanover Police say officers were called to reports of a disturbance on Saturday and upon arrival saw a suspect vehicle leaving the scene.
Police say they directed the driver to stop, but he didn't and instead attempted to flee the area. Hanover Police say the driver nearly struck an officer in the process.
Police officers began pursuing the suspect vehicle. They say it was “driving dangerously, striking curbs and nearly striking a police cruiser.”
Town Police managed to stop the vehicle and officers arrested the driver. The male suspect was transported to hospital for treatment.
Police say while in custody the suspect became enraged and violent towards police, and attempt to disarm an officer and take his or her handgun.
According to police, the suspect was then subdued.
Hanover Police say investigation determined a 53-year-old had committed a sexual assault and was later remanded into custody on numerous criminal charges, including sexual assault, assaulting police, attempt to disarm an officer, flight from an officer and dangerous driving.
The name of the accused is being withheld under the authority of a court ordered publication ban to protect the identity of the victim.
