A 127 kilometre path connecting Lake Huron to the Highway 401 corridor has received a massive facelift.
Guelph To Goderich (G2G) Rail Trail Inc. has reached the halfway mark in fundraising for Project Red, an initiative to revitalize the former rail bed.
The project will need to raise $225 thousand to maintain the G2G corridor, with approximately $122 thousand already raised.
Executive Coordinator with G2G, Chloe Klopp, says the main issues addressed through Project Red this summer were rocky and grassy areas around Monkton and Milverton, where cyclists often used local roads as a detour.
Klopp tells Country 104.9 News the trail was grated, fresh gravel was laid, and trees were trimmed to widen the pathway for cyclists and hikers.
While work continues along the Perth County section of the four county trail, preparations are being made to further connect the pathway entirely between Goderich and Guelph.
Kloop says a drone team with Wilfrid Laurier University has captured images of abutments where bridges are out along the G2G trail.
She hopes to work with the University of Guelph to create mockups of bridges where there are currently none.
Fundraising will need to continue to pay for those bridges.
