Jays OK In Ontario…Unless Feds Veto
The province of Ontario publicly stated they have approved the Toronto Blue Jays plan to play their 30 home games at Rogers Centre this summer.
However, the final decision will rest with the federal government whether or not to allow visiting Major League Baseball clubs to cross the border.
A final decision will be made within days.
The Jays open their 60 game season next Friday at Tampa Bay
The home opener is scheduled for July 29th against the Washington Nationals.
CFL Hall of Fame
The Canadian Football Hall of Fame announced their class of 2020.
Quarterback Henry Burris was selected in his first year of eligibility and will be inducted along with 5 others
Offensive linemen Clyde Brock and Freddie Childress, quarterback Greg Vavra will also be inducted as players.
In the Builder category, former Calgary Stampeders Head Coach and current President and General Manager, John Hufnagel, as well as, former Saint Mary’s University coach and Athletic Director, Larry Uteck (posthumously), will be inducted.
The 2020 class will be honoured alongside the 2021 inductees next August.
Edmonton Eliminates Eskimos
The Edmonton Canadian Football League franchise has made an internal decision to change its ‘Eskimos’ nickname,
An announcement could come next week.
Edmonton’s decision follows a team announcement that a review of the nickname was ongoing and comes on the heels of the Washington National Football League franchise ceasing the use of its nickname, one that was deemed to be derogatory towards Indigenous people.
More Woe For Washington
A report relates 15 female former employees of the NFL franchise in Washington said they were sexually harassed during their time with the team.
In a statement, the team said it takes issues of employee conduct seriously and will address them promptly.”
Owner Dan Snyder hired a law firm to review the club’s culture, policies and allegations of workplace misconduct.
Washington is in the midst of several months of significant change both with their on the field operation and around the club, most notably recently dumping the name ” Redskins ” after 87 years.
Hub City Flood
The Edmonton Oilers say damage to its arena from heavy rainfall will not affect plans to use Rogers Place as an NHL hub when the season re-opens.
Edmonton was hit with a major thunderstorm that caused water leaks in one of the entrance hallways and smaller leaks elsewhere.

NHL Award Finalists
Former Owen Sound Attack captain Bobby Ryan is a finalist for the National Hockey League’s Bill Masterton Trophy
Ryan who departed and then returned to the Ottawa Senators this season along with Oskar Lindblom of the Philadelphia Flyers and Dallas Stars defenceman Stephen Johns are the finalists for the Masterton Trophy.
The award is given to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication
Ryan entered the NHL/NHL Players’ Assistance program in November to get help for alcohol addiction.
Varna, Ontario native Ryan O’Reilly of the St Louis Blues is a finalist for the National Hockey League’s Lady Byng Trophy.
O’Reilly who played Minor Hockey for the Seaforth Stars is in contention for the award along with Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews and Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche
The award is presented to the NHL player that has exhibited sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of play.
