Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has seized a semi-automatic rifle and a pistol from the scene of yesterday’s shooting in Haliburton.
The Unit is investigating after a 73-year-old man, yet to be identified, died in a police-involved shooting.
It occurred after the man is reported to have assaulted a Minden Valu-Mart employee after being asked to wear a mask early Wednesday morning.
The shooting occurred at a property off Indian Point Road. OPP caught up with the man there via his vehicle license which they obtained during a short police pursuit that was called off in the interests of public safety.
Four SIU investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
Investigators continue to make attempts to locate the man’s next-of-kin. The SIU reports that the firearms of two police officers were also secured.
A post-mortem on the deceased will be conducted tomorrow morning.
Four OPP officers have been designated as witness officers and arrangements for interviews are underway.
The SIU wants anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
