Had the Federal government done nothing, the true cost on public health and the economy would have been far greater.
That from PM Justin Trudeau today in advance of a national fiscal and economic update on the impact of Covid-19 on Canada.
That report will be released later today, but Trudeau gave a snapshot of his own at today’s daily briefing.
Trudeau says that although the number of hospitalizations and deaths from Covid-19 is declining, we aren’t out of the woods yet.
The improvement is due in part to Canadians following public health instructions, he said.
There are still some hot spots though in Canada.
“So, as we continue to gradually reeopn the economy, we have to remain vigilant,” he said. “We have to follow public health advice.”
When the pandemic hit, lots of people lost their jobs overnight.
The country faced an unprecedent choice, said the PM – let Canadians figure things out on their own, or help them.
Trudeau says Canada has an exhaustive plan to fight the pandemic – 11 million Canadians have so far received the CERB or benefited from the wage subsidy.
We’ve been focused on keeping you safe and getting you the support you need since the beginning of this pandemic, and this morning I’m giving an update on where we are and the road ahead. Watch it live: https://t.co/xfH9v9AWdR
