Strong words from Wasaga Beach’s mayor on the crowds at the main beach on Canada Day.
Nina Bifolchi called the crowded beach a “blatant disregard” of physical distancing rules.
She called an emergency special council meeting this afternoon (Thursday).
Council has voted unanimously to reduce public parking at Beach Areas 1 and 2 by 50 percent starting this coming weekend.
That includes the Playland parking lot and the Beach 2 picnic area.
The Spruce Street parking lot remains open for residents only, by permit.
The second phase of this plan means by next Thursday, the sand covered portion of Beach Drive will be closed with barriers, fencing and signage.
There will be three walkways to still be able to access the beach businesses and the water.
They will be across from the Playland parking lot, across from First Street and across from Second Street.
Council has also voted in favour of a by-law to bring in hefty fines for anyone who goes into a closed public area in town such as Beach Drive. The fine would be $750.
