The Port Elgin Wednesday Beach Market is cancelled this year.
The Market Committee says the health and safety of their vendors, volunteers, and visitors is paramount.
A media release from the Market Committee says,”It was a hard decision, but weighing all facts and health concerns, it is just not socially responsible to move forward this year.”
Beach Market chair, Connie Barker says they're trying to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, “To keep everybody safe and just to stay safe and take it seriously.”
She also notes, with restrictions as they stand right now, only food vendors would be allowed and they only account for three or four out of the 100 vendors.
According to Barker the market sees thousands of visitors in a season.
Barker says the team will work alongside the municipality to monitor the ongoing situation and are open to evaluate other opportunities for the beach area should the situation change, and they can guarantee the health and safety of all.
Barker says, “If things open wide up, right up…in the middle of August, we might have a market day.”
The market would have opened in the last week of June.
