A Facebook post on a page called “Saugeen Shores Against Racism” is inviting people to take a knee at the flagpole on High Street in Southampton this evening at 6. (June 8)
The post encourages people to wear masks and 'peacefully' stay at least 6 feet apart while taking a knee for 8 minutes and 46 seconds in recognition of the death of George Floyd in Minnesota after a police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes, leading to Floyd's death.
Public Health Grey Bruce is recommending virtual forms of taking part in anti-racism activism like signing petitions, donating to groups and learning more about racism and how to address it.
The Health Unit says “If you must participate in any local rallies, to please be mindful that COVID-19 is still with us.”
It's urging those taking part in gatherings to maintain physical distancing, wear a mask at all times and bring hand sanitizer along with you.
Meanwhile, a group called 'Kincardine Kneels' is holding an event at 7 p.m.
The sounds of car horns and bells will indicate the start of the solidarity event where people in Kincardine are encouraged to kneel, sit, or lie down in their front yards for eight minutes and 46 seconds.
They're also encouraging supportive signage and posting pictures of your participation to the Facebook event page, KINCARDINE KNEELS, with the hashtag #KincardineKneels or #KincardineSolidarity.
