Rallies and demonstrations occurring in many cities across the globe following the death of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis, has prompted a public health statement from the Grey Bruce Health Unit.
The Health Unit says it has the responsibility to identify risk associated with any public health threat, and in light of the COVID-19 pandemic it is recommending virtual forms of taking part in anti-racism activism such as signing petitions, donating to groups and learning more about racism and how to address it.
“Racism is a Public Health issue. Racism, in its many forms, profoundly impacts the health and wellbeing of individuals, families and communities. We recognize that, at this time, people may want to gather to march and express themselves with respect to supporting efforts to end racism,” a statement from the Public Health organization explains. “The Grey Bruce Health Unit has the responsibility to identify risk associated with any public health threat, including COVID-19. We remind people that gatherings increase the risk of transmission of disease.
The Health Unit says “if you must participate in any local rallies, please be mindful that COVID-19 is still with us.”
It's urging those taking part in gatherings to do so responsibly by taking steps to keep as safe as possible and reduce the risk of transmission, by maintaining physical distancing when possible, wearing a mask at all times and bringing hand sanitizer along with you.
“Social media and virtual protests remain the safest way to have your voice heard,” The Grey Bruce Health Unit stresses. “Those living with a vulnerable person in their household, should also consider participating virtually.”
