As the provincial government continues with its reopening plans, medical experts continue to warn that it may be too early.
Epidemiologists tell CBC they are bracing for a 2nd wave of COVID-19 — and believe it may come in September.
Rama Nair, an expert in epidemiology at the University of Ottawa says, “It’s not just going to disappear,” adding “We haven’t reached anywhere near the herd immunity that we require to avoid a second wave.”
She says, “Until we get the vaccine, I don’t think we can really avoid the second wave.”
Disease experts say that COVID-19 hasn’t flattened because it’s gone through our community, it’s flattened because we’ve distanced, so we’ve only slowed it down.
They say the key now is to keep that new spread under control, especially when people can be carriers of the virus and not show any symptoms.
