98 The Beach in Port Elgin is celebrating 15 years today.
It was first launched as a repeater station on the AM dial in 1978 by its sister station CFOS, as CFPS.
The adult contemporary station listeners know today was created on May 20th, 2005 when the CRTC approved Bayshore Broadcasting's request to switch from the AM band to 97.9 on the FM band.
The goal was to provide a local service for Saugeen Shores and the surrounding community that had its own morning show and its own local news and information.
It was the first FM station outside of Owen Sound for Bayshore Broadcasting.
Late last year, Bayshore Broadcasting applied to put a new FM radio transmitter in Tobermory that would rebroadcast 98 The Beach all the way up the Bruce Peninsula. The application is being reviewed and if approved, it would be found at 91.9 FM.
Bayshore Broadcasting now has nine stations; 560 CFOS, Country 93.7 and Mix 106.5, are all based out of Owen Sound. In Bruce County, it has 98 The Beach in Port Elgin and Country 104.9 in Goderich. Country 105 broadcasts out of Shelburne, 97.7 Max FM is in Wasaga Beach, 89.1 Max FM broadcasts out of Orillia, and Country 102 is based in Bracebridge.
Today also marks the 100th anniversary of the fist radio broadcast in Canada.
