A South Huron resident was bilked out of more than $2 thousand, in a popular scam that is now involving the COVID-19 crisis.
Huron OPP say the “mystery shopper scam” involves fraudsters calling their victim, asking them to visit various stores, and offering payment in the form of a fake cheque.
Police say a South Huron resident was asked to check if local shops were conforming to COVID-19 regulations.
After receiving a cheque over-paying the agreed amount, the scammers asked the victim to return the excess through a bank draft, while the original cheque bounced, leaving victim out $2,600.
OPP remind you legitimate employers will never request a portion of your payment back, and deals which sound too good to be true often are.
