Higher rates of women than men are becoming infected with COVID-19, in Huron and Perth counties.
According to the latest numbers of Huron Perth Public Health, 34 women in the two counties have been confirmed with the novel coronavirus, compared to fifteen men.
The region’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Miriam Klassen, says the reason is likely due to the higher number of women than men working in long-term care homes.
Klassen points out more women are residents of long-term care homes than men, where many of the outbreaks have been reported.
According to Klassen, testing for COVID-19 has prioritized health workers and residents of long-term care homes, which could show greater infections among women in the data.
Men, says Klassen, are more likely to die from the novel coronavirus than their female counterparts.
