The Women's House Serving Bruce Grey reminds the community that help is still there during these times of isolation.
Executive Director for the Women's House – Lisa Owens says historically during a pandemic, its not uncommon to see a huge demand in shelter service.
“It's still early, but history tells us that during pandemics, it's not uncommon to see a huge demand in (shelter) service, particularly after it's over,” she says.
“We're telling everyone to stay home, to be safe; but for women who are in a home that's unsafe it actually puts them at an increased risk. There are services still available and operating, but they're not accessible as they normally would be.”
Owens says the Women's House is still operating as an essential service, to comply with the Province – outreach is being offered remotely and the shelter is operating at a reduced capacity. She says there is also an enhanced screening process to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
Women are encouraged to contact the crisis line at 1-800-265-3026.
She says families are dealing increased hardships, which compounded with limited transportation and financial issues can make it difficult for women to leave a potentially harmful situation.
It's recommended that friends and families continue to keep the lines of communication open to reduce isolation during the pandemic.
According to the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services more than two-thirds of violent incidents against women are committed in private residences, such as the victim and/or offender's home (69%).
