West Grey’s police fleet will receive a few replacements.
Council has approved 90 thousand dollars from the 2020 West Grey Police Service Capital Budget for the purchase of 2 new police vehicles.
The approval was provided prior to the finalization of the 2020 budget.
The request for early approval, in advance of the budget being passed, says Mayor and West Grey Police Services Board Chair Christine Robinson was to enable the purchase of the vehicles sooner rather than later.
She says “It’s a competitive market for police vehicles and we want to ensure that we are in the que to order and purchase.”
Because police cruisers are custom built and the project must first be put to tender, it could take up to six months or so before the two new vehicles arrive.
The new cruisers will replace two older models. On Twitter, West Grey police say one will be a hybrid vehicle in an effort to be greener and reduce fuel costs.
Robinson says the new purchases are part of the West Grey Police Chief’s Asset Management Plan of rotation of vehicles.
She says policing a municipality the size of West Grey, it is not surprising at how much wear and tear as well as high mileage is put on these cruisers.
Robinson adds West Grey Police vehicles are essential to the West Grey Police Service and its Officers.
As such, Robinson says they have a vehicle rotation in place to ensure that police have the proper working vehicles in place to serve the community.
With approval now in hand, West Grey Police can begin the process of putting the vehicle purchases to tender.
West Grey Police have half a dozen vehicles. (5 marked cruisers and 1 unmarked cruiser.)
