With the recent rainfall which has resulted in a snowmelt, the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority (SVCA) has released a Watershed safety message to watch out for elevated water levels; especially around the Saugeen River.
While significant flooding is not expected, rivers could reach or exceed bankfull conditions, with minor flooding in traditional low-lying areas
The recent rainfall could amount to 15 to 25 mm and the SVCA says recent snow surveys indicate the average water content in the snowpack is higher than normal for this time of year. Warm temperatures and saturated soils will cause the melting snow to run-off quickly to local watercourses.
The SVCA also warns of more extensive flooding, should the region receive rainfall amounts greater than what are currently forecast. Stream flows are expected to peak on the smaller to medium-sized watersheds early Wednesday morning and Wednesday evening on the larger rivers.
The Grey Sauble Conservation Authority also issued a watershed conditions statement and says while unusual flooding is not expected at this time, low-lying areas may see seasonal flooding events.
There is also a concern for potential ice jams in Grey Sauble watersheds.
“We are still noting some ice cover throughout our watersheds. The increase in water levels will likely mobilize the ice sheets and they may cause jamming and localized flooding,” a statement from the Conservation Authority explains. “Grey Sauble would like to remind everyone that during spring runoff events, potential conditions exist that could pose a risk to personal safety.”
The Grey Sauble Conservation Authority manages watersheds in parts of South Bruce Peninsula, Georgian Bluffs, Arran-Elderslie, Meaford, Chatsworth, Owen Sound, Blue Mountains and Grey Highlands.
Municipal and County staff should monitor problem areas and prepare to close low-lying roads. Residents are reminded to stay away from all watercourses. The cold water, combined with slippery and unstable stream banks, will create hazardous conditions near all waterways.
This message will remain in effect until 11:00 am on Friday, March 13th, 2020, unless local conditions warrant further updates.
