In an effort to extend the life of the landfill site and protect the environment, Hanover is exploring its organic waste options.
Organic waste diversion and collection may become an option for Hanover residents.
Council has instructed staff to investigate opportunities such as green bin curbside pickup, composting at the landfill as well as exploring partnership opportunities such as Southgate’s organic waste diversion facility.
Councilor Warren Dickert says landfill capacity continues to be a concern which is why it is important to investigate options when it comes to organic waste diversion.
He says it may be surprising to some of just how much of household garbage is made up of organics.
If the organics could be diverted from the landfill he says it would not only cut down on pests and seagulls on site, but it would also extend the life of the landfill.
Staff will present Council with a report o possible organic waste diversion and collection options in the near future.
Cost will have to be factored in to any Council decision.
Hanover’s strategic plan does include investigating potential future advances in waste management such as green bins.
