A post-mortem examination has confirmed a West Grey police officer who was found dead Tuesday, took his own life.
Owen Sound Police say investigators attended a post-mortem Wednesday with the coroner and it was determined Constable Cory Trainor succumbed to a self-inflicted injury.
Trainor was found dead in a police cruiser on Sideroad 6 in Southgate Township on Tuesday morning. He was 28-years-old.
There has been widespread mourning in wake of Trainor's death. In West Grey, flags have been flying at half-mast and Mayor Christine Robinson has expressed “great sadness” over the loss of one of their officers. The West Grey Police Service has said the tragic loss is being felt throughout its close-knit community.
Many police officers, police services and police associations across Ontario have also spoken out to offer condolences.
Const. Trainor was a media relations officer and often attended community events to represent West Grey Police. Last year, he was recognized for helping save the life of his neighbour in Shelburne who suffered a heart attack. Trainor was off-duty and administered CPR until first responders arrived.
In a statement, Owen Sound Police says it wishes again to express its most sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Constable Trainor.
“Mental wellness within our communities and our members remain a priority for Ontario police services,” a release from Owen Sound Police Insp. Dave Bishop says. “We encourage anyone who needs assistance or knows of someone who needs assistance to reach out for support through local health service providers.”
