A Southgate Township resolution calling for amalgamating transit services with Bruce and Grey Counties is making the rounds for support.
Earlier this month Bruce County wasn't too fussy about Southgate's resolution and on February 10th, Saugeen Shores council expressed the same sentiment.
The issue comes up at Kincardine council tonight.
Saugeen Shores Mayor and county councillor Luke Charbonneau says if SMART disappears, there needs to be a viable alternative to provide the same type of service.
Kincardine Mayor Anne Eadie says “It would be a huge loss if there was even any break because it (SMART) enables so many people to get to appointments….so it's very valuable.”
The Southgate resolution states that its council “recommend to other SMART member municipalities that we cooperatively explore amalgamation of service with Grey and Bruce Counties to deliver the SMART service to reduce transit duplication, develop transit efficiencies through one service delivery model and specifically to reduce our present back-haul time and costs without customers on-board.
SMART is a specialized public transit operation serving primarily mentally and physically challenged residents.
Participating partners are Saugeen Shores; Kincardine; Huron Kinloss; Arran Elderslie; Brockton; Hanover; West Grey; Chatsworth and Southgate.
