The end is near for the Douglas Point Nuclear facility near Bruce Power and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) has been contracted for demolition work.
CNL's Director of Douglas Point Decommissioning Ian Bainbridge says, “The building has had it's time. It has served its purpose.”
Douglas Point or as most locals recognize it as “The Point,” marked the beginning of nuclear power production in Canada.
The Point reactor operated from 1967 to 1984.
Bainbridge says the decommissioning is not going to happen overnight but they hope to start dismantling the non-nuclear section for the next couple of years before tackling the more radioactive area.
Communications Specialist for CNL Margot Thompson says their presentation to Kincardine council on Monday, February 3rd and a similar presentation to Bruce County council on Thursday, February 5th is to start engaging communities about the project.
Thompson says they also hope to speak to as many groups as they can about the work ahead at The Point.
The Douglas Point facility is expected to be levelled when the work is complete and the land left in an industrial-level future use.
