Three cases of fraud were reported to West Grey Police in just four days this month.
According to West Grey Police, the first incident occurred on January 21st when a customer service representative at a bank intercepted a CRA scam in progress.
The next day on January 22nd, a scammer claiming to be from TD Visa convinced a person in Mount Forest to purchase $800 in STEAM video game gift cards and send them to the scammer.
On January 24th another scam was reported after someone clicked a bad link on a website and had their computer locked down, they then sent a credit card payment to the scammers that were later reversed.
West Grey Police Constable Cory Trainor says that although often convincing there are some telltale signs it could be a scammer on the line.
“They often ask people to purchase gift cards and send the material to them as a proof of purchase,” Trainor says. “Banks don't do this.
Trainor urges anyone who has suspicions of fraud to contact their financial institution, local police and the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre.
