Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “
We’ve come to the end of 2019….almost…and once again on our web page you’ll find the local and regional sporting highlights from the year almost gone by.
This is an exercise I do on a daily basis, simply write down the headline or moment that was front & center on any given day on 560 CFOS.
Please keep in mind, I don’t work every day ( it just seems that way ), so I probably missed a highlight here and there.
Anyhow, here’s some from 2019 that stood out to me;
– The Attack-Guelph OHL trade that gets kiboshed with Attack players en route to Storm game at London and then the next day the teams complete 6 player multiple draft pick transaction sending Sean Durzi, Zachary Roberts & Nick Suzuki to the Storm in exchange for Barret Kirwin, Zach Poirier & Mark Woolley + 4 picks.
– Julie Tippin loses Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts Championship Final at Elmira 6-4 to Rachel Homan
– Owen Sound Leeder & Associate Major Atoms win OMHA Championship beating Barrie Junior Colts 3-1 to win series 3-1
– Sacred Heart Crusaders win OFSAA ” A-AA ” Boys Hockey Championship at Kincardine.
– Olivia Daniels of the Phoenix Gymnastics Club won the Provincial title on the Floor exercise at the Provincial Gymnastics Level 8 at Amherstburg
– Guelph Storm win Ontario Hockey League Championship. Former Attack forward Nick Suzuki wins Wayne Gretzky Trophy as Playoff MVP
-Former Attack netminder Jordan Binnington wins Game 7 of Stanley Cup Final for St Louis Blues over Boston
-Bruce Richardson wins the Dream of Glory at Hanover raceway with ” Knight Angel “.
– Shallow Lake Sting Win Softball Canada Under 19 Championship in Owen Sound defeating Delisle Pride 14-2 in the Championship Game
– Eddie Maunder won the Pro event at the 13th annual Shouldice Designer Stone-Cobble Beach ProAm
– Nolan Smith of Georgian Bay Community School wins the Boys Singles at CWOSSA Tennis in Waterloo
– Saugeen Shores wins Kraft-Heinz Project Play Grand Prize of $ 250,000 for Lamont Sports Park
– Softball Canada wins Gold at the WBSC America’s Under 17 Men’s Softball Qualifier at Guatemala defeating Mexico 4-1 in the Championship. Owen Rahn of Durham, Matthew Weiler from Hepworth & Cargill’s Jackson Pegelo are members of Team Canada
– The CWOSSA Football Semifinal shifted from Victoria Park Owen Sound to Jacob Hespeler High School in Cambridge due to snow & winter conditions in Owen Sound
– Mark Kean of Woodstock defeated Richard Krell from K-W to win Port Elgin Superspiel XXXVIII…..
That’s a sample of 2019. Tomorrow, the most compelling sequence of sporting events from 2019 for our region
