Andrew Scheer has stepped down as leader of the federal Conservative party.
He first announced his intention at a caucus meeting in Ottawa this morning.
At noon today, he stood up in Parliament with an official resignation speech.
Scheer tweeted it was the most difficult decision he has ever had to make and that he's stepping down once a new party leader is elected.
Scheer says the move is a way of putting his party first and his family first.
He says he will continue to serve as MP in his riding of Regina-Qu'Appelle for the 'near future.'
This was the most difficult decision I have ever had to make. I have announced my intention to step down as the Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada once a new Leader is elected. I am putting my party first and my family first. WATCH LIVE: https://t.co/BEjBQ7DI3d
