The Canadian U17 Junior Men’s National Team beat Argentina 7-2 and advanced to Saturday’s Gold medal game, taking advantage of six defensive errors by the Argentinean squad. Canada has also qualified for the 2020 WBSC U18 Men’s World Cup in New Zealand with a guaranteed Top 4 finish.
The game was scoreless through two innings despite both teams putting runners on base. Canada was able to produce the first run of the game in the top of the third when Owen Rahn (Durham, Ont.) hit a one-out single to center, moved up to second on a throwing error on a ground ball to the pitcher, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when the catcher’s throw to third was off the mark. Argentina answered immediately in the bottom of the inning by getting a leadoff triple over the left fielder and the runner later scored on a fielder’s choice to tie the game at 1-1.
Connor Brooks (Napanee, Ont.) led off the fourth with a single to center, advanced to third when the next batter reached on a fielding error by the second baseman and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Matthew Weiler (Hepworth, Ont.). A fielder’s choice and a single to left by Max Major (Delisle, Sask.) put two runners on base before Joey Rousseau (St-Charles-de-Bellechasse, Que.) smashed a two-run double to the left field corner, giving Canada a 4-1 lead. Argentina got one run back in the bottom of the frame, drawing a leadoff walk with that runner later scoring on an RBI triple.
In the top of the fifth, Canada got a leadoff walk by Ryan Bicknell (Prince Albert, Sask.) and took advantage of another error by the second baseman to allow McKay to reach base. A high chopper to the pitcher advanced the runners to second and third before Jackson Pegelo (Cargill, Ont.) singled to left to score Bicknell, but McKay was thrown out at home. The following inning, Rousseau drew a two-out walk before Nathan Running (Innerkip Ont.) lined a single on a line drive to center that rolled past the centerfielder, allowing Rousseau to race around the bases to score and Running ended up on third. Bicknell then lined a triple to the left field corner to score Running as Canada increased its lead to 7-2. Argentina got a pair of singles in the bottom half of the sixth but wasn’t able to cash those runners in and they were retired in order in the seventh to end the game.
Andrew Van Boekel (Bright, Ont.) started the game in the pitcher’s circle for Canada and pitched two innings, allowing a run on two hits and three walks with two strikeouts before being replaced by Running after allowing a leadoff triple in the third. Running pitched four innings of relief to earn the win, allowing a run on three hits and one walk while striking out five batters. Reese Yantzi (Shakespeare, Ont.) closed out the seventh with a pair of strikeouts. Rousseau’s two-run double was the key hit for Canada with Bicknell adding an RBI triple. Pegelo singled in a run and Weiler drove one in with a sacrifice fly, while McKay, Brooks, Major, Rahn and Running all added singles to Canada’s 10-hit attack.
Canada improved its record to 4-1 while Argentina dropped to 3-2. Later in the evening, Mexico defeated host Guatemala 15-2 to finish the preliminary round with a 5-1 record, while Guatemala dropped to 3-2. Argentina will play Guatemala on Friday, and since Canada holds the head-to-head tie-breaker over both those teams, they will advance to Saturday’s Gold medal game against Mexico. The red and white will first wrap up its preliminary round with a game against Belize (0-5) at 5:00pm CST (6:00pm EST) on Friday.

Skating in its first game of the 2019 CIBC Canada Russia Series, Team OHL showed little sign of needing time to come together as a group as the squad cruised to a 4-1 victory over Russia.
Opening the scoring just over five minutes into the initial frame, Team OHL capitalized on the man advantage and grabbed an early lead courtesy of Flint Firebirds captain and Dallas Stars prospect Ty Dellandrea who knocked a rebound by Russian netminder Daniil Isayev.
Team OHL then pushed its lead to two less than four minutes later when Saginaw Spirit centre and 2020 NHL Draft hopeful Cole Perfetti cashed in from the doorstep to net the eventual game winner and help his squad carry a 2-0 margin into the first intermission.
Not yet finished, Team OHL then built a three-goal cushion at the 6:40 mark of the middle frame when London Knights forward and Washington Capitals up-and-comer Connor McMichael wired home a perfect shot from the slot. The tally drew an assist from Sudbury Wolves centre Quinton Byfield, who notched his second helper of the game after first getting his name on the scoresheet upon setting up the game-opening goal.
Byfield joins Perfetti – as well as Erie Otters defenceman Jamie Drysdale – as one of three draft eligibles from Team OHL who project as first-round selections in the coming 2020 NHL Draft per NHL Central Scouting. Meanwhile, the accolades continued for Byfield as the budding talent also wrapped up the night with Player of the Game recognition.
“They’re playing well,” Team OHL head coach Dale Hunter said following the victory. “The Russians are a big, heavy team and (Byfield and Perfetti) held their own against big, strong guys who are a lot older than them, so that’s a credit to them.”
Team OHL then punctuated the victory late in the final frame on a goal by Niagara IceDogs captain and Los Angeles Kings prospect Akil Thomas who found the back of the cage at the 16:50 mark. Not to be outdone, however, the Russians got on the board with 42 seconds remaining in the game on a goal by KHL forward Vladislav Mikhailov who put a puck by Ottawa 67’s netminder Cedrick Andree to spoil a shared shutout after Nico Daws of the Guelph Storm turned aside 13 shots by the halfway mark.
Team OHL will now look to secure its second straight victory when the tournament shifts to London on Monday for Game 4 of the 2019 CIBC Canada Russia Series.

Vaughn CHL Team of the Week
The Canadian Hockey League today announced the seventh edition of the Vaughn CHL Team of the Week for the 2019-20 season based on individual performances from Oct. 28 – Nov. 3.
Headlining the forward ranks is Lethbridge Hurricanes left-wing Oliver Okuliar, who wrapped up the week with eight points counting seven goals and one assist across three contests. His top performance came in a career-high four-point outing against Winnipeg on Friday in which he collected a hat-trick plus one assist. For his efforts, Okuliar was recognized as the WHL On the Run Player of the Week.
Also up front for the second week running is London Knights centre Connor McMichael who finished the week with eight points counting four goals and four assists across two appearances. A first-round selection by the Washington Capitals, McMichael’s best showing of the week came in an incredible six-point outing against Erie that saw him register six points, counting three goals and three assists, including the overtime-winning tally. The successful week saw McMichael named the OHL On the Run Player of the Week.
Rounding out the forward ranks is Rimouski Oceanic centre Cedric Pare, who tallied seven points counting four goals and three assists in two games. Pare shined Thursday against Saint John as he finished with three goals and three assists, helping him claim first-star honours in addition to earning recognition as the Ultramar Player of the Week.
On the blue line, Shawinigan Cataractes defenceman Marc-Antoine Pepin had a solid week as he collected six points – all coming as helpers – in two games. His best performance came in his most recent as he tallied four assists to factor in every Cataractes goal in Saturday’s contest against Baie-Comeau.
Rounding out the back end is another member of the Hurricanes in rearguard Alex Cotton, who registered five points counting one goal and four assists across three appearances. Cotton’s best game came in Friday’s 8-2 win over Winnipeg as the second-year skater registered one goal and three assists to guide his club to victory.
Between the pipes, Portland Winterhawks netminder Joel Hofer was nearly unbeatable across a pair of victories as he turned aside a combined 62 shots in 133 minutes of action. The St. Louis Blues prospect, who wrapped up the week with a 0.90 goals-against average and .969 save percentage, also earned recognition as the WHL Eli Wilson Goaltending Goaltender of the Week.
