The 32nd Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular came to a close over the weekend and the organizers say it was another excellent year.
Besides the days full of family activities and evenings of live entertainment this year also saw huge fish being pulled in.
The winners of the derby were a 29.5lbs salmon caught by Wayne Hollet and a 20.62lbs lake trout caught by Chris Jackson.
Hollets fish caught in the first weekend of the derby beat out even the winner of the Chantry Chinook Classic that took place in Bruce County earlier in August.
Mike Prevost, co-chair on the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular Derby Committee says that coupled with the larger fish then previous years the overall health of the local fish seems to have improved as well.
“The volunteers who clean the fish were impressed by the quality of the meat coming off these fish,” Prevost says “they had nice colouring, seemed very healthy.”
Prevost also gave a huge thank you to all the local sponsors and community supporters stating that the derby wouldn't be possible without them.
