The sport of lacrosse has been played at almost every level through the years in the city of Owen Sound.
The lone exception, I’d think is the Junior A category.
Currently, Owen Sound fields both a Junior B club and a Senior entry in the OLA.
The Junior B program, as I understand it, grew out of the Junior C entry back in the late 1970’s.
And prior to the year 2000, the Owen Sound Senior NorthStars often had interlocking games against Major Clubs from Brooklin, Peterborough & Brampton.
Plus, for decades Minor Lacrosse operated out of the old downtown arena and the now departed Coliseum, while in contemporary times Minor games go at the Harry Lumley-Bayshore Community Centre and the Julie McArthur Regional Rec Centre.
Tonight the annual Owen Sound Minor Lacrosse Awards & Recognition Night will be staged at the Lumley-Bayshore .
To appreciate the historic link between today and the sport’s past in Owen Sound look at the names on the awards to be handed out tonight;
– The Harry Kazarian MVP award
– The Cy Lemon Community and Sportsmanship award
– The Cubby Cruickshank MVP award,
– The Jeff Tait Dedication and Perseverance Award,
– The Donnie Campbell Award
– The Fred and Wendy Cathrae Volunteer of the year award
& the John Picket Memory Plaque,
Tonight is a night to conclude the current season of Minor Lacrosse in Owen Sound which also adds another year to the long history of the sport in the city.
