Today is the National Day of Mourning for Workers killed or injured on the job.
The Grey Bruce Labour Council is hosting a ceremony in Owen Sound at 11 am under the big gazebo across from the library.
Fight for the living, mourn for the dead, that says Grey Bruce Labour Council member Hazel Pratt-Paige is what today is all about.
This year’s theme is Safe & Healthy Work…..Insist On It.
Whether it is fast food, retail, industry, construction or farm work, she says workers need to know their health and safety rights.
Pratt-Paige says employees have a right to refuse unsafe worke, and they need to know who to go to if that situation ever arises.
She says this is especially true for young people new to the work world.
Pratt-Paige adds Grey Bruce is not immune to workplace death.
In 2015 an out of town firefighter lost his life participating in a private water rescue training exercise in the Saugeen River in Hanover and in 2010 a 25 year old Westario Power worker was killed on the job.
Pratt-Paige says today’s National Day of Mourning ceremony serves as a reminder that we cannot sit on our laurels, or become complacent when it comes to workplace safety.
She says workplace safety is everyone’s responsibility and that is why employees, managers and owners all need to work together for the common good of all.
