Construction is expected to begin this year on a new hotel and conference centre in Owen Sound's east side.
The president of Toronto-based builder Legacy Hospitality Management and Development Arif Ismail tells Bayshore
Broadcasting News the company intends to commence work on a six-storey, 100-room TownePlace Suites by Marriott Hotel this summer, once all approvals are complete with the city.
The hotel would be located on 16th Avenue East.
Ismail says an application was recently put into the city for a rezoning amendment, and once it receives approval Legacy Hospitality intends to proceed with submitting construction drawings and then applying for a building permit.
Along with a hotel and conference centre, Ismail says the application also includes a commercial space.
Once work begins, it's expected to take up to two years to complete.
Ismail says the hotel will feature a meeting space, indoor pool, possibly a bar/restaurant and other amenities.
He says the company targeted Owen Sound to build in because it believes the market is right for a new hotel development.
“We felt this site was ideal for an extended stay hotel as it has a hospital nearby, Georgian College, new commercial development and new potential residential development,” says Ismail.
Legacy Hospitality Management and Development has built over 20 hotels across North America, Ismail says, including a similar model to the Owen Sound proposal in Kincardine.
According to a past Bayshore Broadcasting report, Legacy Hospitality first announced plans for a $14-million hotel in Owen Sound in 2013.
