One of the most historic shipwrecks in Georgian Bay has been discovered.
The Manasoo was carrying a crew of 21, about a 100 head of cattle, and dozens of cargo on board and was heading from Manitoulin Island to Owen Sound when it sank off Griffith Island near Wiarton in 1928.
The ship had been recently purchased by the Owen Sound Transportation Company.
The Manasoo was found by a trio of hunters: Americans Ken Merryman and Jerry Eliason, and Cris Kohl from Windsor.
Kohl is a ship historian and says they searched for the ship for several days this summer before they found it 200 feet beneath the surface.
He says they felt if the ship was sinking it would be in an area closest to shore which was Griffith Island.
Kohl says when they went down to get a closer look at the ship, they were amazed at how much of it was preserved.
He says the pilot house with its steering wheel is intact, 3 of the 4 lifeboats remains attached, and there is a 1920's automobile inside the cargo unit.
This the third ship that Kohl, Merryman, and Eliason have found in Georgian Bay.
Kohl says there are hundreds of ships that sank in the Great Lakes but no one knows where they are.
He says it is like a solving a mystery and mysteries are a part of the attraction of locating these wreckages.
