The dock in Big Bay will likely see some repairs soon.
Georgian Bluffs Mayor Al Barfoot says there is a large crack on the far end by the water's edge, and there haven't been any major repairs since roughly 2001.
Barfoot says like many major harbours and docks, the federal government is largely responsible it, “The federal government has been aware of it for a number of years so obviously the plan is to fix that segment.” He says the boat launch needs some work as well.
The town is estimating its portion of the bill at roughly $100,000. The total cost is around $248,000 with the federal government chipping in.
Barfoot says the town has had some consultation with user groups who are willing to fund a large portion of the work. “They certainly are on board with that so the majority of that if not all of it would be by the user groups,” says Barfoot.
Barfoot says the Griffith Island Club is a major user of the dock and they will be speaking with town staff about contributing to the repair cost. He says they may talk to people who use the dock to get to White Cloud Island as well.
According to Barfoot, some federal representatives are going to be in the area next month to look at some harbours and docks that need work in Grey Bruce.
Barfoot says they initially understood the federal government's deadline to do the work was March 2019, “It's going to be pretty tough to have all that work done by that time frame, so unless we hear further correspondence between now and the middle of October, that will be a point of discussion that we have with them when they come to see us at that point,” says Barfoot.
