There's no clear timeline for the completion of the Owen Sound City Hall renovation, but it could be September.
The roughly $8.7-million project ($8,695,794) was initially set to be done in July.
City Manager of Property Kristan Schrider says it's is still on budget but has been delayed from the early stages of work back in March 2017 with the excavation of the basement, the discovery of more mold and asbestos than previously thought, and the need to level the foundation.
Schrider says the completion date now hinges on the delivery of materials.
They're waiting on the delivery of doors, which according to codes, have to be in before people can move in.
They're also waiting on a stone ceiling from Ledgerock. “They're doing everything that they can in order to speed up the production and the delivery of that,” says Schrider.
That is supposed to show up around the third week of August.
She notes, there are three key elements to the project; budget, quality and time, “If I had to give on one of those three elements of this project, then schedule & time is one that we could afford to give on.”
The cost of renting the professional centre each month ($21,000) is covered by the contractor and Schrider says any further renting costs will likely still fit into the already set aside relocation budget.
In addition to increasing space at the building from 20,000-25,000 square feet, they city is also adding an archive, storage and print centre.
Meanwhile, things that had been planned for later on like filing system installation and some furniture setup will be done before its time to make up for other work delays.
About 50 people will be moved into city hall over the course of a week or a week and a half once all the work is done.
Schrider says the grand opening will come later when everyone is settled in, and details like hanging pictures and information boards taken care of.
