An early morning fire at Yummy Yummy Sushi in downtown Owen Sound caused upwards of $300,000 in damage.
Owen Sound Police say officers, firefighters and EMS were called to a structure fire in the 200 block of 10th Street East at about 6:30 a.m.
Police say 10 people were evacuated from apartments above the restaurant. Residents told Bayshore News they were evacuated at about 7 a.m., and were given shelter at the Circle K convenience store at 10th Street East and 3rd Avenue East while emergency crews cleared the scene.
“All but one of the tenants was going to be able to return to their apartments today,” police say in a release. “The displaced tenant made arrangements to stay with a friend until he could return to his apartment.”
Victim Services along with the Canadian Red Cross attended the scene to assist those affected by the fire.
City Police say the blaze was limited to the kitchen area of the restaurant, which suffered significant damage.
Owen Sound Fire with the assistance of Inter-Township Fire extinguished the blaze before it spread to surrounding buildings.
Police say three people, including two officers, were treated and released from hospital for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.
Fire Chief Doug Barfoot estimates structural damage between $75,000-$100,000, plus another $200,000 in content damage.
The source of the fire has not yet been identified, but police say Owen Sound Fire Service have found nothing to suggest foul play was involved.
