Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “.
Happy Thanksgiving.
One of my all time favorite days took place on the Friday leading into March Break in 1971.
I was in Mrs Veall’s Grade 5 class at the time and when the clock struck 3:30 that particular afternoon, I bolted to the Midland Arena Gardens, which was 4 blocks from Mrs Veall’s desk, to watch a High School Hockey playoff game between the Midland Saints and Banting Memorial from Alliston.
The place was packed.
After the game, I went home had dinner, and then went right back to the Gardens for an Intermediate Playoff game between the Midland Flyers & the Parry Sound Shamrocks.
The place was packed. Again.
I’m sure you’re expecting me to launch into a typical ” it-used-to-be-better ” soliloquy.
Not really. Not today.
I got thinking about that great day & night of hockey this week after seeing the notice from Kincardine about their Hockey Day at the Davidson Centre.
Tomorrow, starting at 9 am, there will be a day-long sequence of Minor Hockey games pitting the Kinucks against their rivals, the Saugeen Shores Storm.
Later in the afternoon, the Ripley Wolves will use the Davidson Centre as their ” home ” arena when they face the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks in WOAA Senior play.
And then finally, tomorrow night, the Jr C Kincardine Bulldogs will host the Penetanguishene Kings in a PJHL Interlocking game.
Hockey Day in Kincardine, might not be as memorable as the MSS-Flyers doubleheader almost 50 years ago….it might be better.
Happy Thanksgiving
I’m Fred Wallace
