The single largest wetland in Southern Ontario will soon be even more accessible.
A brand new “floating” boardwalk system has been built through the Greenock Swamp near Chepstow allowing people to really get inside the Class 1 wetland and see it first hand up close.
Shannon Wood, Manager of Communications at the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority, tells 98 The Beach (Bayshore Broadcasting News) the swamp itself comes in at roughly 20-thousand acres in size.
“It is absolutely huge,” says Wood, adding, “not only is it incredibly significant from a natural perspective in terms of rare and unusual species, but it’s also got an incredible amount of history and culture with it, so it makes it a very unique setting indeed.”
The boardwalk system is referred to as a “floating system” so that it does not interfere with the local habitat and ecosystem.
The project was taken on by the Saugeen Valley Conservation Foundation and through fundraising and several partners, the project was brought to fruition.
A Grand Opening is slated for today (June 9) from 1pm to 3pm at Schmidt Lake.
To get to the location of the grand opening, Wood suggests heading to Chepstow and from there, following directional signs right to the spot of the grand opening.
