Hi this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire ” brought to you by your local Auto Logic- the Logical Choice.
It’s a busy weekend; the Attack play at Kitchener tonight and then host the 4th annual Bears in Blue game tomorrow night when they host Mississauga.
Sunday, the annual Owen Sound Ice Hawks Girls Hockey Showcase goes at the Harry Lumley-Bayshore Community Centre with numerous games featuring every age bracket in the Ice Hawk program.
And in between, the 1976-77 Midland Legion Midget Hockey team will be having a 40th reunion Saturday.
On November 26th, 1976, the Midland Legion Midgets beat Collingwood 5-2 in one of 71 games played that year, an unheard of total for that era and all the more remarkable considering the Midland Arena had burned down in the Summer of 76 leaving the Legion Midgets without a home base.
Seventy-one road games, man.
On the road that season, the Legion Midgets spent two glorious weeks at a tournament in Mora, Sweden and later became the first team in the history of the town to win the International Silver Stick, beating Windsor Shoreline 3-2 in overtime at Sarnia.
Everybody knows Steven Dunn scored the game tying and the overtime game winning goal that day at Sarnia…… It will be funny to see who claims they assisted on those plays.
Tomorrow, we’ll see who remember what from 40 years ago when the Legion Midgets conduct the opening faceoff at the Silver Stick Tournament and then fittingly head to the Midland Legion for a flashback function.
Have a great weekend.
I’m Fred Wallace
