Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire ” brought to you by your local Auto Logic, the Logical Choice.
I’ll admit I’m highly unqualified to comment on the Rio Olympics having spent most of the Summer Games either sequestered in the Press Box at Duncan McLellan Park or buried amid the rubble of my parents basement. By the time I got through both of those sessions, the Olympics were over.
However, from what I understand in the aftermath of the Olympics is that Canadian officials are quite satisfied with the showing at the Games.
The stated goal was to be among the top dozen countries in terms of medals won, and the Canadian team accomplished that, finishing with 22 medals, 4 of which were Gold.
Some Canadian athletes and teams who were expected to capture gold, silver or bronze did not, yet the previously unheard of Penny Oleksiak managed to grab 4 medals and now is a household name in the country, so there was almost a fitting balance.
And while it’s a Canadian slogan, it was the Americans who actually ” owned the podium ” earning almost 100 more medals than Canada.
I fully doubt that Canada will ever reach the lofty athletic status of the States when it comes to the Summer Olympics, but after encouraging performances, especially by our women’s entries, moving up the medal ladder for 2020 in Tokyo is something to aspire to.
I’m Fred Wallace
