Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire ” brought to you by your local Auto Logic, the Logical Choice.
This has been a very good year for Canadian sports performers, especially in sports that aren’t necessarily Canadian strongholds.
In golf, amateur Jared du Toit gave us a 3 and half day thrill ride at the Canadian Open, landing in the final pairing on the final day.
Yes, it’s been more than 50 years since a Canadian won the Open, and we may never see it happen again, but du Toit’s run was thrilling.
Canadian Women golfers also gave us thrills. Teenager Brooke Henderson out of Smith Falls wins majors and is ranked # 2. And Hamilton’s Alena Sharp as exhibited at the British Open is also capable of a conquest.
One of the most enjoyable afternoons of the summer was spent at a bar in Dublin watching Milos Raonic defeat Roger Federer at Wimbledon in the semifinals.
Sure, two days later at Waterford, I skipped the crystal tour to watch Raonic get swept by Andy Murray in the final.
Still, factoring that golf and tennis aren’t mainstream for Canadian sports and combined with the recent Olympic Games, there’s quite a bit to be proud of from a national sporting standpoint.
I’m Fred Wallace
