Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire ” brought to you by your local Auto Logic….the Logical Choice.
In May, netminder Curtis Sanford was among those inducted into the Owen Sound Sports Hall of Fame.
In a brief acceptance speech, Sanford said not one word about his career or accomplishments, but rather gratefully acknowledged his family for their support and sacrifice through the years.
And while the moment of acceptance was nice, pure Curtis Sanford, I’ve got to tell you I was disappointed he didn’t talk about his greatest netminding performance.
In the Winter of 1997, the Owen Sound BDO Atoms eliminated Midland in a hotly contested Georgian Bay Playoff Championship.
Having seen the deciding game in Owen Sound, I can tell you almost 20 years later, Midland was cheated. BIG TIME.
And when I said so the next morning on CFOS, a challenge game was quickly arranged, one in which the BDO Fighting Accountants challenged my team to a game.
So confident of a victory over these kids, I upped the ante and declared my team could win with just 4 players….two other radio announcers, and a ” Mystery Player. “
So Brent Bissell, Dave Middleton and I took the ice and after grabbing a quick 2-0 lead in the first minute, we promptly ran out of gas and never left our zone again.
For the remaining 58 minutes of that game, our ” Mystery Player “, Curtis Sanford then of the Owen Sound Platers, made 163 saves to preserve a 2-2 tie.
Curtis Sanford may have had nights on a bigger stage, but in my mind, that 2-2 against the Fighting Accountants was Hall of Fame worthy.
I’m Fred Wallace
