Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire ” brought to you by your local Auto Logic, the Logical Choice.
Saturday, I was at Leon’s in Owen Sound essentially to promote the ” Save The Tax ” event.
And while I did promote the event to the fullest of my ability, I also spent considerable time in the TV department ( thanks Mike ) watching Day 2 of the NHL Entry Draft.
And in a curiosity, I found myself rooting for Victor Mete.
Had the reluctant Attack first rounder been taken in the first 2 rounds of the NHL Draft, Owen Sound would have received an elevated draft pick from the London Knights who acquired Mete in a deal with Owen Sound almost 2 years ago.
Unfortunately, Mete went 100th overall, a 4th round pick, to Montreal, which means the original Owen Sound-London deal remains.
I checked that original deal, and for Mete and Owen Sound was to receive three 2nd round picks, 2 thirds and the conditional 6th which is now cemented.
From that package, Owen Sound utilized the 2 third round picks in separate deals, one of which was the acquisition of Liam Dunda from Plymouth.
In a bothersome irony, London got that original pick back from Flint in a later transaction for Zack Grzelewski.
Owen Sound may also have gassed one of the 2nds as part of the Josh Sterk acquisition from London.
So by my count, Owen Sound still has a pair of 2nds and the now entrenched 6th remaining.
By another count, Victor Mete has a Memorial Cup and has won 5 OHL Playoff rounds with London while the Attack, over the same period of time, have won 3 playoff games.
Now some will argue, Owen Sound got Markus Phillips as part of the Mete mix.
Fair enough, but Owen Sound would have got the Phillips pick at # 9 in 2015 if they traded Mete to any of the other 18 OHL clubs.
If it sounds like I’m not keen on the OHL’s compensation package, you’re right.
I’m Fred Wallace
