The “welcome” sign at Sauble Beach has become an iconic symbol for the resort town — and the base of the sign will soon change.
South Bruce Peninsula Mayor Janice Jackson says the vegetation that had been part of the base is gone and it will be covered.
Jackson says at first, they thought flagstone would be nice but it’s labour-intensive and expensive.
Second thought was eight-inch river rocks but the maintenance of this product would be a problem.
Jackson says they’ve settled on a stamped concrete with flagstone designs.
Council agreed to the work at a cost of $15,000.
Jackson says the work will be done by the end of June and the start of the summer tourist season.
The work coincides with the cleanup of willow bush roots at the north end of the beach.
