Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire ” brought to you by your local Auto Logic….the Logical Choice.
Do we like the Julie McArthur Regional Rec Centre ?
I’d think based on the events of the last 7 days we should.
Sure, weather was a significant obstacle, but had the conditions been ideal, the two ice pads would have been host to the CWOSSA Girls Hockey Championship, the CWOSSA Boys Hockey Championship and the SCTA Atom Qualifying Tournament.
Put another way, if the roadways were smooth, and this is no fault of the Rec Centre, by my count 8 High School Girls Hockey teams, 8 High School Boys Hockey teams and 10 Atom Hockey teams would have-could have-should have utilized the facility over a 5 day span.
26 teams, at say 15 players per team equals 400 players.
Almost all of those 400 players were from elsewhere; yes there were Owen Sound participants plus Walkerton and Kincardine players at the high school level, but still an influx of 300-400 people plus parents into the city.
Now I recognize that not every one of those people ate out, filled up with gas, used a grocery store, made a purchase etc.
But the point is, without the facility most of those 400 athletes and supporters would have competed somewhere outside of the city and region.
I’m Fred Wallace
