Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire ” brought to you by Auto Logic- The Logical Choice.
In the Winter of 1985 a young man moved to Owen Sound and with nothing much to do on a Friday night, he went to the Bayshore to watch the Greys play the Kitchener Junior B Rangers.
I remember Owen Sound won 5-1 that night and among the most impressive players for the Owen Sound squad was a forward named Mike Roberts….
More than 30 years later, I call the home of Mike Roberts in Owen Sound to speak to his son, Connor.
Connor Roberts is having trouble sleeping these days. You see, Hockey Canada called him earlier in the week to officially confirm that he had been selected for Canada’s entry at the Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway next month.
Roberts is the captain of the Grey Bruce Highlander Minor Midgets and plays his home games in the somewhat remote community of Chesley. However, listening to hockey people talk around the province, Roberts’ reputation is evolving upwards by the moment.
Beginning in early February, Connor Roberts will depart first to Calgary for a training camp, and then jet off to Norway to represent Canada at the Games.
Mike Roberts was a very good player for the Junior B and Tier II Greys in the mid 80’s. Thirty-some years later, his son, Connor has the chance to be an even better player starting on the World stage next month.
I’m Fred Wallace
