Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “.
It’s been a long time between Senior Hockey games at Lion’s Head.
The old North Stars departed from competition in the early 1990’s after a glorious stretch in the late 80’s that climaxed in 1987 with the WOAA Grand Championship.
Senior Hockey in Lion’s Head is gone, but definitely not forgotten and promoters in that community have staged ongoing talks with the Shallow Lake Crushers to host a neutral site game at their arena.
That concept becomes reality this weekend when the Crushers face the Durham Thundercats in a regular season matchup.
More than a promotion, the game carries significance on a number of levels.
The Thundercats are trying to catch Mapleton-Minto for 1st place in the North. The Crushers are just 2 points out of third in the division.
Furthermore, according to Crushers General Manager Rick LeQuyere both the Thundercats and Crushers have players with solid ties to Lion’s Head.
And finally, a good showing at Lion’s Head is significant for the WOAA Senior brand and the Crushers desire to expand their base of operations along the Bruce Peninsula.
So while the North Stars may not shine again, Senior Hockey returns to Lion’s Head on Sunday afternoon.
I’m Fred Wallace
