Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire. “
I hinted earlier that I had an ongoing project this year, not a major project, but an interesting project in which I made a note of my top local story each day.
Now that the 2015 calendar is coming to a close, I’ve created a Top 10, in my view, of the best local sports stories of 2015.
# 10…October 9th- The Grey Cup comes to Kubota-Owen Sound for the Friday Night Lights Game at OSCVI
# 9…this was fun; Corey Schwartz comes home for a July vacation and promptly gets signed and thrust into goal for Grey Motors United
# 8…Hanover Raceway’s big night, the ” Dream of Glory ” was won August 3rd by ” Hemi Seelster ” in 1:57.4.
# 7, not a highlight, really, but certainly a memorable morning- April 14th- former Attack coach Mark Reeds passes away
# 6, August 14th, the Wiarton Nationals Won the ISC II Championship at Indiana.
# 5, October 19th, a significant victory for Jason Crone and Canada as they win the World Wheelchair Rugby Championship at England
# 4, another World Championship, September 28th, Canada with Adam Jones wins the Indoor Lacrosse
# 3, seemingly from out of nowhere, July 15th, Katie Sauks of Owen Sound & her partner Liz Fenje win gold at the Pan Am Games in the Women’s lightweight double skulls.
And our top 2 come from World Cup Skiing at opposite ends of the calendar; 11 days ago, Larisa Yurkiw won bronze at World Cup Downhill in France.
The # 1 local sports moment, January 15th in Italy, Yurkiw wins Silver at a World Cup Downhill.
That’s my Top 10…yours may differ.
But in summation, 2015 stands as another great year for local sports and local athletes, both in the region and well beyond.
I’m Fred Wallace
