The development of a Sauble Beach Town Square is back on the radar of South Bruce Peninsula.
The development of a beach-front facility, that could house a permanent bandshell and other entertainment amenities has been off and on the radar of various councils since 2008.
Mayor Janice Jackson says the land in question currently is a parking lot from Lakeshore Boulevard North, east to 2nd Avenue North, between Main Street and First Street North.
Jackson envisions an amphitheatre-type facility that could house concerts, art shows and other events with the beachfront as a backdrop.
She says she’d like to develop the entire property, eliminating the existing parking lot, but keeping the washroom facilities that are there now.
Jackson says South Bruce Peninsula hasn’t done a lot for the main area of Sauble Beach in quite some time and such a project is long overdue.
Councillor Ana Vukovic agrees with the mayor that such a development could top off what is already considered a world-class beach.
Like the mayor, Vukovic has no problem losing the existing parking spots in order to develop a Sauble Town Square.
She says, sometimes when you gain something, you have to lose something and there’s plenty of parking already available along Lakeshore Boulevard and Second Avenue.
Councillors directed staff to investigate further to see if there are grants available to develop such a project.
