Saugeen Shores Council has asked staff to come back with a report on the location of the volleyball nets at Port Elgin’s main beach.
The town received a letter of complaint, stating the courts take up too much of the beach — particularly this past summer with the high water levels.
The letter, signed by Ron Kelly, states the courts generate no revenue for the town yet are “taking half the public beach away from local and vacationing families that pay to rent cottages and want to use the beach for their family’s enjoyment.”
Kelly says he’d like to see the town not allow organized sports on the beach, but suggested a couple of courts could be put up at each end of the beach, away from the main area.
Councillor Mike Myatt says the town should look at seeing if everyone can be accommodated.
Myatt admits the volleyball courts are very busy, even on non-league nights, when the general public takes advantage of them.
Deputy Mayor Luke Charbonneau agrees the town should talk with the sports groups but with the approach of keeping the group providing the service it does.
He says the volleyball league is open to talking about possible fees for using the nets and perhaps re-locating the nets to other areas of the beach.
