Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “, brought to you by Auto Logic, the Logical Choice.
The quest to win all 4 tennis majors continues tonight for Serena Williams.
Williams who has already captured the singles title at the French Open, the Australian Open and at Wimbledon, will go against Roberta Vinci in the semifinals at the US Open in Flushing Meadows this evening.
Tuesday night, Williams defeated her sister, Venus, in the quarterfinals, needing 3 sets to keep her pursuit alive.
Afterwards, Serena related Venus pushed her as hard as anyone has all year, and the impression was that Serena felt only a poor performance on her part would keep her from destiny.
I find this Grand Slam sweep attempt truly remarkable.
First, because no player has done it since Steffi Graf swept all 4 majors in 1988, more than a quarter century ago, truly illustrating how difficult it is to take all 4 majors in any given year.
In the Open era, only Graf, Margaret Court and Rod Laver have accomplished the feat, so this is a truly rare journey for Serena.
Secondly, I find it remarkable that Serena Williams is chasing this dream as she approaches her 34th birthday later this month.
Pro tennis is a young persons games, and not that 34 is old, but if Williams was going to sweep a calendar grand slam, I would have thought she’d have done it earlier.
Regardless, Williams has the attention of many as she returns to centre court tonight looking to advance to the US Open Women’s Final
