Lockerby Dam near Paisley will cost close to $150,000 to remove.
Manager of Water Resources and Stewardship Services at Saugeen Conservation Jo-Anne Harbinson says a contract has been awarded to Van Driel Excavating from the Clinton Area to remove the dam.
Harbinson says the bid price was $149,000 and change. Work is to begin in mid to late July.
Harbinson adds back in 2006 the Saugeen Conservation had a study done on the safety and fish habitat at Lockerby Dam.
She says it found that there are safety concerns and that it is a fish barrier.
Harbinson says there are about 52 dams in our watershed that are preventing fish passage and are also a water quality detriment.
She adds the main objective of the dam removal is to improve the ecosystem restoring the rivers natural flow.
Harbinson says the structure and concrete will be removed, erosion protection will be placed along the river bank and some rehabilitation will be done on the pond.
She tells Bayshore Broadcasting news the total project will cost about $230,000.
The dam located on the North Saugeen River is about five minutes east of Paisley — and Harbinson says it is a historic site as Lockerby was settled in the 1850’s.
Harbinson expects the dam and in-stream work to be completed by the end of August and the pond rehabilitation done by early October.
Harbinson says they have received a great amount of funding including $125,000 from the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
Other Funding Includes, $45,000 from Bruce Power, $10,000 from the Lake Huron Fishing Club, $7,500 from Saugeen Conservation Foundation, $2,000 from Stewardship Grey Bruce, and $3,000 from Community Foundation Grey Bruce.
